ST 36 Acupuncture Point - “long life point”
Although this particular acupuncture point has a strong and well-documented association with digestion, in traditional Chinese literature and holistic practice, ST36 is frequently stimulated not only to improve digestive health but also to enhance overall vitality, boost immune function, and promote long-lasting health and longevity. This makes it especially valuable for individuals going through cancer treatment, as it supports the body’s resilience and helps alleviate some treatment-related side effects, contributing to a more balanced and strengthened state of well-being.
FIND THE POINT
Four finger widths down from bottom of knee cap, confirm area by moving foot up and down. Use your thumb or index finger to massage the acupoint with deep and steady pressure. Massage the point in a circular or up and down motion for one to two minutes.
Indications for Using ST 36
ST 36's clinical applications are extensive and far-reaching, reflecting its profound significance in traditional Chinese medicine for both diagnosis and highly effective treatment. It is particularly adept at tonifying deficient Qi and Blood, making it a crucial and often indispensable acupuncture point for addressing a broad spectrum of health challenges such as low immunity, chronic illness, poor digestion, and general physical weakness or fatigue—especially during demanding periods like cancer treatment.
Moreover, ST 36 is pivotal in treating a wide range of problems related to the Stomach and Spleen, including abdominal and epigastric pain, various gastrointestinal issues, bloating, nausea, vomiting, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), diarrhea, and constipation. Additionally, this point plays a vital therapeutic role in clearing disorders along the entire course of its meridian channel, further supporting Lung function in respiratory conditions such as asthma and wheezing. It is also highly valuable in managing various psychological and emotional disorders, including stress, anxiety, depression, nervousness, and insomnia, thus highlighting its broad, holistic therapeutic benefits and its integral place within comprehensive Traditional Chinese Medicine care.
ST 36 Acupuncture Point Study on Mice
Research has shown that stimulation of ST 36 in mice can lead to enhanced immune function, reduced inflammation, and faster recovery times from injuries or illnesses. These findings not only confirm traditional claims about ST 36's benefits but also provide a scientific basis for understanding how acupuncture affects the body at a cellular level.
Other Research
Serotonin Release: Activating ST 36 has been found to boost serotonin levels in the immediate area. Serotonin is a key neurotransmitter that affects mood, digestion, and sleep, which might explain the calming and mood-enhancing effects of acupuncture at this point.
Inflammation Reduction: Research involving rat models has shown that stimulating ST 36 can lead to a decrease in inflammation. This is marked by lower levels of certain inflammation markers, such as interleukin 6, and a reduction in swelling caused by inflammation. Essentially, ST 36 might help your body's natural defense system work more efficiently against inflammation.
Improves Insulin Sensitivity: For those concerned with blood sugar levels, ST 36 stimulation has been shown to make the body more responsive to insulin, which is crucial for managing diabetes and maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.
Increases Cerebral Blood Flow: The activation of ST 36 enhances blood flow to the brain, a benefit that's facilitated by the production of nitric oxide. This may contribute to better brain health and function.
Lowers Blood Pressure: Interestingly, ST 36 also plays a role in reducing blood pressure and calming the nervous system. This is tied to its ability to decrease sympathetic nerve activity, offering a potential natural remedy for managing high blood pressure.
Pain Relief: One of the most celebrated effects of ST 36 is its analgesic, or pain-relieving, properties. This is partly due to the increase in nitric oxide and endogenous opiates—your body's natural painkillers. It also involves the activation of certain receptors in the brain that are known to regulate pain.
Nicotine and Alcohol Withdrawal: For individuals struggling with nicotine addiction or undergoing alcohol withdrawal, ST 36 stimulation has shown promising results in reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms. This effect is attributed to changes in brain activity, particularly in areas associated with addiction and habit formation.
